Mile Marker
Fayetteville/Summersville

The best whitewater rafting in the eastern US is found in Fayette and Nicholas Counties. At Hico, Mile 50 (New Mile111), near the middle of the Midland Trail, U.S. 19 intersects US Route 60. From here visitors find access to the New and Gauley Rivers. Several outfitters in the area offer Class V-VI rafting.  This area has become a Mecca for all sorts of outdoor activities -rock climbing on the face of the New River Gorge, lama trekking into the Gorge, kayaking and each Oct. base jumpers leap from the New River Gorge Bridge (2nd Sat in Oct.).

Greenbrier River - Lewisburg and Ronceverte

The Greenbrier River is a gentle river. Here visitors can take tubing float trips, canoe, or bike along the river along the Greenbrier River Trail.

Biking West Virginia is becoming a national pastime! Greenbrier River Trail (pix below) features about 80 miles of biking and hiking trails created as a part of WV’s unsurpassed Rails-to-Trails program. In fact, WV has created thousands of miles of bike trails.

If biking is your thing, call 1-800-CALL-WVA and ask for a free copy of Bicycle WV.
